As the leaves begin to turn in Columbus, Ohio, our OptimALL Services executive team had the profound privilege of attending the annual SPICE Mass of Inclusion on September 28th at St. Catharine of Siena Church. This heartfelt celebration, led by Bishop Earl K. Fernandes, brought together around 350 members of our faith community to honor the inherent dignity of every person, and especially those with disabilities.

For us at OptimALL, an organization dedicated to empowering students in Catholic and faith-based schools to reach their full potential through inclusive education, this event felt like a divine affirmation of our mission. It wasn't just a Mass; it was a vibrant reminder that God's family has room for all at the table.

The SPICE program (Special People in Catholic Education) has long been a beacon of welcome in the Diocese of Columbus. This year's Mass overflowed with joy. Families, educators, and participants of all abilities filled the pews, their smiles and shared songs creating an atmosphere of true belonging.

Bishop Fernandes' homily struck a deep chord, challenging us to confront exclusion and embrace the radical inclusion modeled by Christ. His words resonated powerfully, echoing the very principles that drive our work at OptimALL every day. In a society that too often marginalizes those with disabilities, Bishop Fernandes spoke directly to the heart of the matter.

“There are those who would say to those with disabilities, you can’t do anything for us, you’re a burden to us, and would seek to exclude them… but the way of the Lord Jesus, and the way of the Catholic Church, is one of inviting all of God’s family into God’s house,” he told parishioners.

These words hit home for our team, who daily witness the transformative power of inclusive classrooms. At OptimALL, we coach teachers, provide specialized interventions, and develop programs that ensure no student is left behind. Every child is worthy of a seat in God's house, and in our schools.

The Bishop went on to affirm the sacred value of every life, a message that aligns seamlessly with our commitment to dignity and respect.

“Human life is a gift from God, and every child, every adult, is a masterpiece from God. And no one has the right to tell another, you do not have a right to exist, you are not worthy of love, and care, and respect,” he said. “In fact, it is our duty precisely as Catholics, who have been loved by God, and made children of God, in spite of our faults, in spite of our weaknesses, to affirm the dignity of each and every person, born and unborn, regardless of our abilities.”

This is the same duty that fuels our teacher training workshops and individualized learning plans. We're not just educating. We're affirming that each student is a masterpiece, crafted with purpose.

Still, amid the celebration, Bishop Fernandes didn't shy away from a sobering reflection on our shared challenges.

“In this country, we have been richly blessed with so many material gifts, and there is a great spiritual poverty,” he said.

This call to deeper faith moved us to consider how OptimALL can bridge that gap. We can do this not only through academic support but by fostering spiritual growth in inclusive environments where every voice is heard and every spirit nurtured.

As the homily ended, the Bishop also extended a warm, personal invitation that left us all feeling seen and cherished.

“There is a place for you here in the Catholic Church, and in the family of God. You belong to God, and you belong to us. Please come and be a part of our family.” He then posed a question that lingers with us: “What type of church is Christ the Lord calling us to be?”

For OptimALL, the answer is clear: a church, and a school system, that mirror this inclusive vision, where barriers dissolve and potential soars.

Walking out of St. Catharine's, our team felt reenergized and inspired. Events like SPICE Mass remind us why we do what we do: to create spaces where all learners thrive. If you're a Catholic school educator, parent, or administrator passionate about inclusion, we invite you to join our family at OptimALL.
